Chapter Fifteen

Since Sam’s TV appeal, the phones at the station had been ringing off the hook.

While some of the calls gave the hope of new leads, most of them were from people with sketchy recollections of the night Dawn was killed.

“We’ve had two calls from residents who are sure they saw Dawn get on the bus that night,” said Harvey. “Another caller is convinced he saw her in a passionate embrace with a man at the school gates, and someone else claims that Dawn appeared to her in a dream last week with the name of her killer, but when she woke up, she couldn’t remember what it was.”

Sam raised an eyebrow.

The sound of footsteps on the stairs was followed by Fred’s face around the door. “Sandra and Walter Grayling are here to see you, boss. They specifically asked to speak to you.”

“The woman who told Glen that Dawn had a child adopted, and her brother?”

Fred nodded. “That’s them.”

“Well, you’d better ask them to come up.”

“We’re delighted that you’ve reopened the investigation into Dawn’s death,” said Sandra, her gloved hands tightly clasped in the lap of her tartan skirt. “I assume DS Tibbs will have already told you all about my recent conversation with him and the valuable evidence I gave him?”

“You’re referring to information that Mrs Hillier was taking medication for depression at the time of her death because she’d given up a child for adoption?”

“That’s exactly right,” said Sandra. “And she didn’t tell her rogue of a husband a word about the baby.” She leaned across the desk towards Sam. “If you ask me, you could do a lot worse than to question Edmund again. I’m still convinced he was involved in her death somehow. It was very convenient that he knew exactly where to find her body, don’t you think?”

Walter cleared his throat. “Well, it could have been that he genuinely stumbled across Dawn by accident, Sandra. He was out searching for her before anyone else, after all.”

Sandra fixed her brother with a steely stare. “Whose side are you on, Walter? I thought we agreed to come to speak to the Detective Inspector to convince him that he and his team should be looking in Edmund Hillier’s direction if they want to put Dawn’s killer behind bars.”

Walter blushed. “Yes, we did, but we should be careful about making accusations without any proof.”

“Poppycock!” said Sandra. “That man is as guilty as sin.” She shook a finger at Sam. “If you keep the pressure on, he’ll crack eventually. I’m absolutely convinced that you’ll find the answer to Dawn’s death at the Hillier house.”

After Sandra and Walter had left the police station, Sam considered his next steps. He looked at the list of items which had been found in Dawn’s handbag.

The purse had been full of money, which backed up the claim in the note found at the school that she hadn’t been the victim of a robbery.

The medication indicated that she’d sought medical help for depression, which Sandra Grayling said Dawn suffered after her parents forced her to give up her child for adoption.
