Chapter Fifteen
Since Samâs TV appeal, the phones at the station had been ringing off the hook.
While some of the calls gave the hope of new leads, most of them were from people with sketchy recollections of the night Dawn was killed.
âWeâve had two calls from residents who are sure they saw Dawn get on the bus that night,â said Harvey. âAnother caller is convinced he saw her in a passionate embrace with a man at the school gates, and someone else claims that Dawn appeared to her in a dream last week with the name of her killer, but when she woke up, she couldnât remember what it was.â
Sam raised an eyebrow.
The sound of footsteps on the stairs was followed by Fredâs face around the door. âSandra and Walter Grayling are here to see you, boss. They specifically asked to speak to you.â
âThe woman who told Glen that Dawn had a child adopted, and her brother?â
Fred nodded. âThatâs them.â
âWell, youâd better ask them to come up.â

âWeâre delighted that youâve reopened the investigation into Dawnâs death,â said Sandra, her gloved hands tightly clasped in the lap of her tartan skirt. âI assume DS Tibbs will have already told you all about my recent conversation with him and the valuable evidence I gave him?â
âYouâre referring to information that Mrs Hillier was taking medication for depression at the time of her death because sheâd given up a child for adoption?â
âThatâs exactly right,â said Sandra. âAnd she didnât tell her rogue of a husband a word about the baby.â She leaned across the desk towards Sam. âIf you ask me, you could do a lot worse than to question Edmund again. Iâm still convinced he was involved in her death somehow. It was very convenient that he knew exactly where to find her body, donât you think?â
Walter cleared his throat. âWell, it could have been that he genuinely stumbled across Dawn by accident, Sandra. He was out searching for her before anyone else, after all.â
Sandra fixed her brother with a steely stare. âWhose side are you on, Walter? I thought we agreed to come to speak to the Detective Inspector to convince him that he and his team should be looking in Edmund Hillierâs direction if they want to put Dawnâs killer behind bars.â
Walter blushed. âYes, we did, but we should be careful about making accusations without any proof.â
âPoppycock!â said Sandra. âThat man is as guilty as sin.â She shook a finger at Sam. âIf you keep the pressure on, heâll crack eventually. Iâm absolutely convinced that youâll find the answer to Dawnâs death at the Hillier house.â

After Sandra and Walter had left the police station, Sam considered his next steps. He looked at the list of items which had been found in Dawnâs handbag.
The purse had been full of money, which backed up the claim in the note found at the school that she hadnât been the victim of a robbery.
The medication indicated that sheâd sought medical help for depression, which Sandra Grayling said Dawn suffered after her parents forced her to give up her child for adoption.
